The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) is an Australia-wide initiative designed to provide support to individuals with permanent and significant disability. It provides funding to eligible people with disability to gain more time with family and friends, greater independence, access to new skills, jobs, or volunteering in their community, and an improved quality of life.
The NDIS also connects anyone with disability to services in their community.
This includes connections to doctors, community groups, sporting clubs, support groups, libraries and schools, as well as providing information about what support is provided by each state and territory government.
The NDIS now supports over 500,000 Australians with disability to access the services and supports they need.
This includes supporting approximately 80,000 children with developmental delay, ensuring they receive supports early so that they achieve the best outcomes throughout their lives.
Objectives
- Helping People: NDIS is there to help people with disabilities live better lives by providing support and services.
- Choice and Control: It lets people choose what help they need and who provides it, so they have more control over their lives.
- Starting Early: NDIS wants to help as soon as possible to prevent problems from getting worse and to support people throughout their lives.
- Fair Access: It's about making sure everyone, no matter where they live or what their disability is, can get the support they need.
- Helping People: NDIS is there to help people with disabilities live better lives by providing support and services.
- Support for Life: NDIS is there for people with disabilities at every stage of their life, adapting to their changing needs over time.
Principles:
- Putting People First: NDIS focuses on what each person wants and needs, making sure their support plan is all about them.
- Having Choices: It's important that people with disabilities get to make decisions about their lives, like who helps them and how.
- Being Included: NDIS wants people with disabilities to be a part of everything in their community, like school, work, and activities.
- Starting Early: NDIS believes it's best to help as soon as possible to stop things from becoming more difficult later on.
- Using What Works: NDIS uses the best ways to help, based on what has been shown to work well for others.
- Working Together: Everyone involved, like families, carers, and organizations, works together to make sure people get the support they need.
These objectives and principles are the heart of what NDIS does, making sure people with disabilities get the help they need to live their best lives.
